History & Milestones
- The California Black Health Network was organized in 1978 as a collaborative arrangement with the Bay Area Black Consortium for Quality Health Care, the Black Health Leadership Council of Los Angeles and the San Diego Black Health Services Association.
- 1980 First Annual Statewide Black Health Conference Who Shall Survive: The Future of Health Care for Blacks in California at Hotel El Rancho Racquet Resort, West Sacramento, California.
- In 1982, CBHN was formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Comprised of four local organizations-The Bay Area Consortium for Quality Health Care, In., Black Health Leadership Council of Los Angeles, Sacramento Valley Black Health Consortium and the Black Health Executives Association of San Diego.
- 1983 Black Health Legislative Day at the California State Capitol presentation of The 1st California Black Health Agenda to the Speaker of the Assembly Health Committee Curtis Tucker; in conjunction with the Bay Area Chapter published The California Directory of Black Health Care Personnel (1982-1983).
- 1985 6th Annual Statewide Black Health Conference on Health and Law convened in conjunction with California Association of Black Lawyers and The California Black Nurses Association.
- 1986 2nd Black Health Agenda presented to California State Assembly Health Committee proposed Office of Minority Health. Published 2nd edition of The Califonia Directory of Black Health Care Personnel (1986).
- 1989 CBHN urges legislators to spend money from cigarette tax revenue on programs to create state Office of Minority Health and to improve the health of Blacks in California.
- 1990 Assembly Bill 15611 passed creating the Office of Multicultural Health; CBHN receives grant from State Tobacco Control Section to conduct the Smoking Attitudes Project (SAP).
- 1992 CBHN (Bay Area Chapter) founding member of California Pan Ethnic Health Network; The 13th Annual Statewide Black Health Conference/Golden State Medical Association Region VI 25th Anniversary Convention & Scientific Assembly hosted jointly Healthy People 2000: A Prescription for Closing the Gap in San Diego, California.
- 1993 CBHN receives its 1st Federal Grant from the Office of Minority Health to Conduct Violence Prevention Workshops Statewide.
- 1995 California Black Health Network welcomes its 5th Chapter, the African American Health Consortium from the Inland Empire.
- 1996 CBHN receives a grant from The California Endowment to produce the 1st California Black Health Network Strategic Plan; receives a grant from the California Office of Multicultural Health to produce the (African American) (AA Edition) California Multicultural Health Resource Directory.
- 1997 CBHN receives grant from State Tobacco Control Section to conduct the Community Tobacco Education Project (CTEP).
- 1998 Hosted Videoconference sites Statewide for Healthy People 2000 Progress Review for Black Americans sponsored by the Office of Minority Health.
- 1999 CBHN receives REACH 2010 Planning Grant from the Center for Disease Control Foundation funded by a grant from The California Endowment.
- 2000 Recipient of a grant from the California Healthcare Foundation to identify and develop community advocates for Improving Health Care Quality for African Americans; Sweet Heart Project receives a four year REACH 2010 Demonstration Grant from the Center for Disease Control Foundation funded by a grant from The California Endowment to focus on the elimination of CDV and Diabetes in African Americans.
- 2000 Awarded a grant from California Consumer Protection Foundation to advocate for African American Managed Care Plan involvement and oversight.
- 2001 Selected as administrative agency for the Statewide African American Tobacco Education Network (AATEP).
- 2002 Opens Sacramento Office of the California Black Health Network.
- 2003 San Diego Black Health Associates, a chapter of the CBHN, opens new office in San Diego, California.
- 2004 The CBHN welcomes new chapter: the North County African American Health Coalition located in Oceanside, California.
- 2004 Selected as administrative agency for the Statewide African American Tobacco Education Partnership (AATEP)
